Art at The Avatar

The Avatar Hotel stands for new age hospitality without losing old world relevance. Among our three pillars of the brand are sustainability and eco sensitivity, mutual respect between guest and host and our favourite, being locally relevant to the destination.

Art is one of the ways we establish the relevance of the hotel to Mangalore. The 7 skylight suites and the sunset suite in the hotel each have a lovely sit out patio with a bright tunnel of light streaming in from the skylight above. And in this patio we have a unique wall fresco in each room dedicated to the culture of Mangalore. You will find among the frescos, The Kambala, The Bhoota Kola, The Temple festival or Utsava, The fisherwoman by the seaside at sunset, The Pili Vesha, The Mosaru Kudike, The Yakshagana.

The wall behind the Guest service desk on level 2 is dedicated to all of the above and more capturing the smaller elements like the prevalence of tender coconut & chuula stoves. We call this the ‘Avatars of Mangalore’.

In the lift lobby on Level 2 you will see lovingly restored 150 year old Spanish windows that adorned the original British bungalow that once stood on the land the hotel now stands on. Within these windows are smaller frescos of childrens games of the region.

At the entry to the rooms lobby you will notice a concept art wall with The Avatar Hotel surrounded by handprints in plaster of paris and painted in rustic copper. These hand prints are of the project execution and pre-opening team that put the finishing touches on the hotel around our opening date in August 2021. We call it ‘The Hands that built The Avatar’. It’s a tribute to all those involved in getting the hotel up and finished and they will remain a part of our history forever.

All the above frescos and art are lovingly painted and conceptualized by Rajesh Shetty and his collective of artists from Adi Tattva Art in coordination with our Executive Director, Prashanth Rao Aroor.

At the entry to The Loft and The Loft – Studio is a Ravi Varma style Tanjore painting depicting Lord Krishna that has been restored and preserved by professionals.

In the lobby on street level within the Stairway Bakery & Café , on Level 1 in the co working space and in each guest rooms room behind the bed, you will find a total of 101 black and white pictures of everyday Mangalore clicked over time and lovingly curated by photographer Pundalik Pai or Annu as he is fondly called by the locals. In each image is a story about the origins and journey of the people of this region. Ask the team for postcards of these pictures that you can send to your friends. The Hotel will be happy to post it for you.

We hope you enjoyed the art. Do take pictures or just stare and Indulge in them and be sure to Tag us on all your posts be it on Google, Facebook or Instagram. Nothing would please us more than for more people to see and enjoy it.
